Directory of alchemical texts online

The following is an extensive (though incomplete) list of digitised historical works on alchemy that are available online. Many of the items were previously listed on the now defunct Spanish-language "Azogue" website for the study of historical alchemy. Rather than allow this treasure-trove to simply vanish, we have reinstated it here, with revisions and enlargements.

Please note, copyright restrictions may apply to these documents and images. Please check each institution's terms of use.

Unfortunately, some of these documents are no longer freely available. Notably, access is restricted to the Rutgers University Early English Books Online project. We are gradually finding replacement sources for many of these works, so check back later.

There are other places you can look for alchemical texts. There are many digitised book and manuscript collections around the world, some of which which contain occasional alchemical texts. Try these collections, for instance: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Also, Adam McLean's excellent Alchemy website on Levity.com contains transcriptions of many alchemical texts.

Johann Grasshoff is listed as compiler of this work in most catalogs. But Carlos Gilly has suggested, based on previously unpublished manuscript sources, that the pseudonym Condeesyanus Hermannus may correspond to Johannes Rhenanus, physician to Calvinist Landgrave Mauricio de Hessen-Kassel (1572-1632). See: - C. Gilly (1994), Adam Halsmayr, p. 150. - C. Gilly (1995), Cimelia Rhodostaurotica, pp. 73, 74, 95.

The treatise Le Miroir d'Alquimie de Jean de Mehun was first printed in Lyon in 1557, with the same title text attributed to Roger Bacon. Actually both works are versions of a Speculum alchimiae widespread in manuscripts attributed to Bacon from the 15th century, though historical analysis has so far rejected such attribution.
